About Yoga
"Yoga" is translated as "to yoke, to join". One
interpretation of yoga might be to yoke body and mind into a single, focused
unit, which brings all aspects of the physical and mental body together. In
this way, we are able to be aware in the present moment, and open to the
endless possibilities that yoga has to offer. You may find that your mind
becomes quieter as your body becomes more active. The engagement of breath
consciousness will focus your mind and calm your spirit. In this way, the
body becomes the vehicle for enlightenment.
The classes at Sun & Moon Yoga will introduce you to the concept of
working your body to clear your mind. Power Vinyasa yoga is an intense,
physical form of yoga which will be challenging - to both the body and mind.
Some movements will change with every in- and exhalation, while other asanas
(postures) will be held for multiple breaths, allowing you to experience the
dynamic and static qualities of these yoga postures. During the lessons we
will also appeal to your senses through the use of relaxing music and calming
scents, enhanced by safe, physical, hands-on adjustments of the postures.
With dedication to your practice, you will be amazed at the benefits and
results.
Forget your pre-conceived expectations of what it means to be a
"yogi": you don't need to be hyper-flexible, model-thin, young or
religious. People of all ages, backgrounds and experiences can benefit from
an active yoga practice. Start with what you have and be happy with the small
changes that will take place over time. Eventually, you will be more
flexible, stronger, better able to concentrate, and
open to what yoga has to offer. You may find that your breath comes more
freely and your mind retains its calmness even after your daily physical
practice has ended. Surprise! This is meditation in action.
